According to dermatologists Marisa Garshick, of Weill Cornell Medicine, Mona Gohara, of Yale School of Medicine, and Janiene Luke, from Loma Linda, the most common errors are neither rare nor complicated: they happen in the bathroom, at bedtime and whenever the sun comes out.
When less is more
Exfoliating more than three times a week, whether with physical or chemical products, can cause redness and small superficial injuries. Sleeping with makeup on prevents the skin from being properly cleansed and can favor acne. Combining powerful active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids in the same night may also irritate the skin or cause chemical burns.
“It is better to add one product at a time and wait for the skin’s response before introducing another.”Marisa Garshick
The effects that accumulate most quietly are related to the sun and to neglected areas. Gohara recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a factor of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days or indoors with natural light. People with darker skin are not exempt: melanin does not eliminate the risk of spots or melasma from cumulative exposure, and there are formulas that leave no white residue.
The neck and décolletage usually remain outside the beauty routine. Janiene Luke, from Loma Linda, warns that this area has fewer sebaceous glands, tends to become dry and ages differently when it does not receive hydration and solar protection. For her, prevention is simpler and less aggressive than trying to repair the damage later.
Not using a moisturizer because of its shine can produce the opposite result: a dehydrated skin may increase its sebum production and become more reactive. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides hydrate without heavy formulas. Garshick, from Weill Cornell Medicine, summarizes the approach: a simple, adapted and consistent routine is more useful than accumulating products.
