Las ventas de supermercados y de autoservicios mayoristas bajaron 3,7% y 3,6%, respectivamente, frente a agosto del año anterior, según informó el INDEC. La caída seituraDespite of the general decline in the retail sector, consumers are shifting their spending priorities towards essential goods such as meat and fresh produce, while more discretionary categories such as beverages and electronics continue to lag behind inflation.
The retail sector experienced a broad contraction in August, as sales at supermarkets and wholesale self-service stores fell by 3.7% and 3.6%, respectively, compared to the same month last year, according to the INDEC. The month-over-month decreases were also significant, dropping by 0.8% in supermarkets and 1.2% in wholesale establishments, on a seasonally adjusted basis.
These figures reflect a broader trend of weakening consumer demand in the Argentine retail market. The eight-month cumulative declines are substantial, with supermarket sales down by 2.8% and wholesale sales down by 2.9%. While these figures suggest a challenging economic environment, they also indicate a shift in consumer behavior as shoppers prioritize essential purchases over discretionary items.
Essential goods lead the way, while discretionary items struggle
Within supermarkets, meat and fresh produce emerged as the strongest performers, with nominal sales increases of 38.5% and 32.6%, respectively, outpacing the 29% implicit price index. In contrast, beverages saw only an 11.5% increase, falling significantly behind inflation. Electronics and home appliances grew by 13.8%, and bakery products rose by 18.5%, indicating that consumers are actively curbing their spending on non-essential goods.
The wholesale sector showed a similar pattern, with fresh produce (35.5%), dairy products (30.2%), and pantry staples (29.8%) leading sales growth. Electronics and home appliances were the only categories to decline in nominal terms, falling by 1%. Beverages recorded a modest 6.5% increase, while clothing grew by 18.7%.
Regional performance varied considerably. In supermarkets, Neuquén, La Pampa, and Río Negro were the only provinces where sales exceeded the price index. Misiones recorded the lowest growth, with a mere 7.7% nominal increase, indicating a sharp real decline. Chaco, Catamarca, and Santa Cruz also underperformed significantly. In the current economic context, these regional disparities underscore the uneven impact of inflation and shifting consumer priorities across Argentina's diverse provincial markets.
